Crispy Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Squares
Ingredients:
1 package (about 1 pound) of puff pastry, thawed
8 slices of ham
8 slices of Swiss cheese
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Optional: mustard or mayonnaise for spreading
Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Prepare Puff Pastry:
Unfold the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. If it’s not pre-rolled, roll it into a rectangle about 1/8-inch thick.
Assemble the Layers:
Cut the puff pastry into two equal parts. On one half of the pastry, spread a thin layer of mustard or mayonnaise if desired. Layer the ham slices and Swiss cheese alternately on top, leaving a small margin around the edges for sealing.
Top with Second Pastry Sheet:
Place the second half of the puff pastry over the filled layer. Press the edges together gently with your fingers or a fork to seal.
Apply Egg Wash:
Brush the top of the pastry lightly with beaten egg. This will give it a golden, glossy finish when baked.
Score the Pastry:
Using a knife, gently score the top layer of the pastry into squares or rectangles, depending on how large you want the servings to be. Be careful not to cut all the way through.
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
Cool and Serve:
Let the pastry cool for a few minutes after removing from the oven. Then cut through the score marks into squares or rectangles.
Serve:
Serve warm, ideal as an appetizer or a satisfying snack.
